Overview
Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2009, with a vision to establish it as centre of excellence in the field of Civil Engineering. Education here prepares students for an exciting career in the industry. The department has well equipped laboratories and our faculty is dedicated to excellence in teaching. It has a fine blend of well experienced faculty members along with young and dynamic faculty members.
Learning digital advancement in construction is a vital aspect to prepare a team of future planners, builders and leaders. At Civil Engineering Department, SIT, we strive to provide the best infrastructure, deliver good quality sessions, organize expert talks, provide international exposure, hands on value addition programs, opportunity to work on funded projects, undergo summer/ winter internship, 6 months industry internship opportunity with stipend, to name a few. Conducive environment, up to date course curriculum, latest laboratory equipment and software training is apt for all round development of a future Civil Engineer and ensuring the students are Industry ready by the end of their 4 years’ program.
The department is engaged intensively Water and Wastewater treatment research. Waste reuse is also another area in which few researchers are working. Department has a funding of 5 million Euros under Horizon 2020.

| Emerging technologies are radically disrupting the job market. Keeping up with the pace of technical developments continuous professional upgradation of working people is important. Considering this, SIT Pune is offering B. Tech in Civil Engineering for Working Professionals for the academic year 2024-25. The Civil Engineering field is constantly evolving, so it's important for working professionals to stay up to date on the latest trends though upskilling. With the new Digital Construction era, the design and civil engineering is embracing new technologies necessitating upskilling with filed knowledge, special digital and analytical skills. This programme is specially designed to equip professionals to take up more challenging roles and stay ahead of the curve. The proposed program offers flexibility to the enrolled professionals by providing 40% of its contents through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The program is designed to suit the timelines of a working professional with classes conducted on the weekends. |

Visit to Precast India Pvt Ltd
B.Tech students along with faculty and staff from civil engineering department visited Precast India Pvt Ltd on 11th November 2022. The company manufactures RCC and Pre-stressed concrete precast structural elements used in various structures. It was amazing visit. Students enjoyed learning pre-tensioning mould of pre stressing. Students understood the heavy post-tensioned bridge girders and its casting.

One-day hands-on workshop on Ferrocement Applications was conducted on scheduled on September 20, 2022.
Mr Ashish Pawar, Director at Artico Reality and Partner at Quadron Reality Pune and Mr Karunesh Jain, Director Moonwater Farms, both Alumini of 2009-13 Civil Engineering batch were invited for Assessment of B. Tech Final Year projects. The alumini of 2009-13 batch of Civil Engineering sponsors the best project award to final year civil engineering students every year since last ten years.
Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) chapter activity
Mr. Amit Haridas, delivered his expert talk on "Impact of Temperature on Concrete" on November 3, 2022. Mr. Amit Haridas is founder and Principal Consultant of the company "ConcreteInfo ''. He is actively involved in RMC consulting services and has an extensive knowledge about temperature control in concrete structures. We are also thankful to Mrs Sucheta Kalawar, Secretary ICI Pune who graced the occasion with her presence and guided students of Civil Engineering department.

An awareness drive on the topic "Save Water" was conducted on 13th April'22 as a part of Service Learning for Second Year Civil Engineering. The drive was held at Lavale Village, followed by a visit to the PAVITR Installation in the village.
International Youth and Sustainability Festival ‘22
Symbiosis International (Deemed University) in collaboration with ExploreiT , Climate Reality Project-India and Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative organized a two day International Youth and Sustainability Festival (IYSF) on 23rd and 24th April 2022 at Symbiosis Viman Nagar Campus. The festival was inaugurated by eminent personalities including Dr. Kunal Khemnar, Additional Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation; Mr. Krishnan Komundur, CEO, Adar Poonawala Clean City Initiative; Mr. Aniruddha Shahapure, Chief Knowledge Officer, Pune Smart City; Dr. Erach Bharucha, Renowned Author and Environmentalist; Dr. Arundhati Warke, Deputy Director Academics- Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT), Mr. Shivam. Singh, Founder ExploreiT and Prof. Dr. Kanchan Khare, Head of Civil Engineering Department, SIT. From Symbiosis International (Deemed University), Dr. Shirin Shikalgar, In charge, Service Learning Centre; Prof. Dr. Kanchan Khare and Prof. Mugdha Kshirsagar, Civil Engineering Department organized and coordinated the festival in association with ExploreiT.
The festival gave a platform to young minds to discuss the possible ways to address Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and go carbon neutral by 2030.
6th National Convention on Ferrocement
The 6th National Convention on Ferrocement was jointly organised by the Ferrocement Society (India) and the Civil Department of Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT Pune), providing a forum for architects, civil engineers and working professionals across India. The event was available for foreign delegates as well in online mode. Topics discussed in this convention included, but were not limited to, projects, R&D in Precast Ferrocement components, necessity of precast for components, types and techniques for moulds, types of matrix-cement mortar, techniques for precasting and meshes, water conservation, Hybrid or composite construction using ferrocement components, and so on.
Faculty Development Program at Civil Department, SIT
Faculty and Research fellow at the Civil Engineering Department attended One Day faculty Development Program organized by the Civil Engineering Department on 31swt March 2022. It was delivered by Prof. Dr. Uttam Kadam, under the MoU between SIT and DBSKKV, Dapoli. Many collaborative opportunities and future projects were discussed based on “Sustainable Agriculture”
SIT ASCE STUDENTS’ CHAPTER
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Students’ Chapter at Civil Engineering Department was established in 2021. Since then, the chapter has been very actively organizing various events and participating in various activities held by ASCE.
The core team has put in day and night efforts for more than 7 months in making it happen. It took more than 100s of concrete mix designs, countless simulations of canoe design and selecting the best out of hundreds of materials based on characteristic properties to finalize the best combination!

6th National Convention on Ferrocement
Renewal of MoU with Ecosan Services Foundation
MoU of SIT with Ecosan Services Foundation, working in the water, wastewater and sanitation sector, is renewed.
While renewing the MOU, we have extended the scope of the MOU and Symbiosis Community Outreach Programme and Extension (SCOPE) is also now part of this MOU. The lead team from SIT, Prof. Kanchan Khare, Head Civil Engineering along with Mr. Sagar Kolekar, Dr. Shirin from SCOPE visited ESF office and MoU was signed by Dr. Dayanand Panse, Director, Ecosan Services Foundation and Ms. Radhika Borgaonkar, Project Manager, Ecosan Services Foundation.
PAVITR Project Pilot plant funded by European Union and DST- Project Bhoomi Poojan
Bhoomi Poojan of the selected site for the construction work of “Anaerobic System and Constructed Wetland for Waste Water treatment” was done on 8th July 2021 as a tradition to mark the start of the construction activity. Civil Engineering students designed their own website for Tech Fest promotion.
CESS Team planned four major technical events along with 4 fun events. Capomaestro hosted more than 3000 participants for its virtual events. It was a grand success.

Participation in Mapathon, IIT Bombay
Mapathon is map making competition for a specific problem statement. This event, organised jointly by IIT Bombay, AICTE and ISRO, to make maps using Indian remote sensing data. The primary objective is to understand the potential of Indian remote sensing data and make maps for Indian regions using free open source mapping software (QGIS). Three teams participated, each having four members of the students working along TTC-Anchorage Club.
Road safety event by i- Safe IIT Delhi
The team participated in the road safety event by i-Safe, IIT Delhi. Many activities such as poster making, webinar and spreading awareness were successfully completed. We secured in Top 50 category in India.
World Water Day celebration
President of CESS created a small video regarding world water day to spread awareness. This video was shared among the students during the early phase of lockdown.

On the occasion of engineers day, the department of civil engineering (CESS) had organized an online paper presentation competition for civil engineering students. The competitions were divided into 2 major domains (Construction Management and Environmental) of civil engineering. The judging panel was comprised of alumni and faculty related to that field.

The team of PAVITR Consortia at SIU presented the progress of their work on the EU India Horizon 2020 funded "PAVITR" project and briefed about the two pilots installed and monitored by SYMBIOSIS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY.
The Department Congratulates PI Kanchan Khare and Co-PI Mugdha Kshirsagar and team members Sayali Apte, Sagar Kolekar, Pranav Sankapal for their enormous work and efforts in making the two pilots function smoothly.
Students of Civil Engineering visited Khamboli village and surveyed the village to address issues on water usage, wastewater management, and dry waste management. The students will be working in the village further on world water day with the EcoSan Service foundation and SCOPE.

Dr. Sayali Sandbhor, Prof. Mugdha Kshirasagr and Dr. Vaishnavi Dabir Received Best paper award for research work with international Collaboration at International Conference on Innovation in science.
Dr Sayali Sandbhor and Dr Sayali Apte were invited to attend "The Policy and Practice Forum" scheduled from April 25-27, 2023 at the "Anil Agarwal Environmental Training Institute". Alwar, Rajastan. The objective of the forum was discussions on how to scale up affordable and sustainable water and waste management practices, innovations in governance, regulatory mechanisms, faecal sludge treatment systems, resource recovery for circularity, rural-urban convergence and climate change and resilience.
Dr Sayali Sandbhor, Head Civil Department was invited to deliver guest lecture on Hands-on BIM at Walchand college of Engineeiring.

Prof. Rushikesh and his team completed experimental set up for BLE Beacon based Indoor Positioning System. This is a good inter disciplinary project. Thanks to Bar Code India Ltd for providing the hardware and sharing the technical expertise.

TRTI MPSC Training
Civil Engineering Department, Symbiosis Institute of Technology, is offering training for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates in preparation of MPSC Engineering Services Examination. SIT, has been successfully awarded a tender by Tribal Research and Training Institute (TRTI) to provide online training to ST candidates located remotely throughout Maharashtra. TRTI selected hundred B.E. / B. Tech candidates with major in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering for training on the merit basis. Students have been provided with Lenovo-manufactured tablets that enables them to access online training. The tablets are distributed to selected candidates at the Commissioner Office, Tribal Development Department at seven regions of Maharashtra.
The competitive examination training sessions will cover preparations of prelims, mains paper- I & II, and interview preparation. Training began from 10th March 2022 in online mode and will last for six months. Prof Dr. Kanchan Khare, Prof. Rushikesh Kulkarni, Prof. Humera Khanum, Abhijeet |hambir, Tushar Marne, Hansraj Gajbhar are contributing to the smooth conduction of the training.
